Yet again, The Vampire Diaries
served up another stunning episode of television with its latest instalment. This show is on fire at the moment - week to week it's some of the most entertaining and thrilling television out there.
We're back in Chicago, and Rebekah's moaning about how times have changed since the 1920s (it's nice for the writers to remind us that she has no idea about modern clothing or music, something we haven't had with the other vampires).
She's trying on dresses but it's not just the modern times that are making her grumpy - it's the loss of her necklace. Stefan says he likes one of the dresses but she knows when he's lying, and her mood doesn't improve when Stefan jokes that Klaus shouldn't have brought her back to life. He heads out for some fresh air, but wait - Katherine's there!
It's always a joy to see Katherine - Nina Dobrev does a fantastic job with her and she's so enjoyably wicked. Katherine knows about the necklace situation but realises that Stefan has a plan he's not telling her. Still, Stefan doesn't feel like including her. Katherine warns him that Rebekah will ruin him, but Stefan's all mean now and just walks off with a smug smile...
Back in Mystic Falls, Elena's giggling along with Damon about chilli, and Alaric is not exactly impressed. Damon says he's just hanging around to make sure Elena's OK about Stefan, and when she insists she's not in denial, he points out she's still wearing the necklace he gave her. Hmm, fair point, Damon. (I also loved Damon's moan about chilli at pot luck events.)
Upstairs, Jeremy's understandably a bit scared when he wakes up to find Anna staring at him (that is quite creepy). She explains she's been trying to get through to him for days - turns out she only managed this time because he'd just been dreaming about her. Downstairs, Caroline comes over to see Elena - and she's brought Bonnie! About bloody time, right? Anyway, Jeremy's thrilled to see her and gives her lots of hugs and kisses, but seeing Anna in the mirror might just put him off a little bit.
Elsewhere, Liz has enlisted Damon to help her with the little Bill problem. Damon's more than happy to be of service, though he's admittedly rather disappointed that he can't just kill Bill and be done with it.
For his part, Bill's sticking to his line that he was just trying to help Caroline (every father tortures his daughter at some point, right? It's for the best). Damon mocks him for thinking he could genuinely change Caroline but Bill's a great believer in mind control. So is Damon, who thinks this is a handy time to do some compelling. Bye Bill!
Back in Chicago, Gloria's struggling to find the necklace so Rebekah suggests using her to help - she only wore it for 1,000 years, after all. Naturally, this makes Stefan a little nervous. Meanwhile, in Mystic Falls Caroline and Bonnie are a bit concerned about Elena's relationship with Damon, but they're interrupted when Elena's necklace suddenly starts burning her. She holds it out to Bonnie, but when she touches it it sparks and drops to the floor.
Yes, that's right - Gloria's found it! But she's not giving away too much information yet. Instead, all she'll say is that she got images of a girl with her friends. It's clear she's hiding something, but when she says she needs space, Stefan takes the opportunity to get Klaus and Rebekah out of there pronto for a bit of a feed. Nice work, Stefan.
It's time for a party at the Lockwood mansion (seriously, Mystic Falls has the most packed social calendar ever
. Do people there ever just sit about and watch daytime TV?) Bonnie's trying to find out what spell is on the necklace, while Caroline's urging Elena not to start dating Damon. But when the necklace starts levitating on its own, all attention turns to that. Elena's not the only one getting advice, either - Alaric thinks Damon should stop pursuing Elena. Damon doesn't take too kindly to the intervention, but luckily he's called away to the Council meeting.
Meanwhile, Jeremy summons Anna in one of the mansion's rooms and she explains the way the whole ghost thing works - it's a push and pull thing. In other words, Jeremy has to be open to it. It's clear that Anna's lonely - she's by herself on "the other side". But what about her warning regarding Vicki? It all gets a bit vague, to be honest - all Anna will say is that she feels "darkness" when she hears Jeremy say he sees her. And Vicki pushes her out, as well. The most tender moment in this whole scene, though, is when Anna touches Jeremy - and of course he can't feel it. But Jeremy raises her hand and allows her to touch him again.
Let's head back to Chicago, anyway. Stefan and Klaus are both feeding (and teasing Rebekah while they're at it). But Stefan says he has to go. As a side note, I have to congratulate Paul Wesley for his portrayal of "bad" Stefan. Just the way he saunters off, wiping the blood from his mouth casually, was so brilliant. Anyway, Stefan has the perfect cover with that weird list of victims' names - Klaus doesn't suspect a thing.
Of course, Stefan heads straight back to Gloria, who reveals that she heard the girls with the necklace talking about him. But she didn't tell Klaus because she doesn't want to help him with anything. She does, though, want that necklace - turns out it's a talisman from the original witch. Stefan doesn't feel like being co-operative, and when Gloria threatens to tell Klaus the truth, he rushes at her. Big mistake - Gloria gives him the mother of all vampire headaches and then forces him to drop on the floor.
It's not long before Stefan is topless and strapped to a table, but it's not as naughty as it sounds. Instead, Gloria's going to use her "old school voodoo" to find that necklace - and she starts off by cutting Stefan's arms and clamping them open to stop the healing (this is, genuinely, really quite gruesome). But why stop there? A little vervain never hurt anyone, right?
Um, wrong. Stefan's screaming - ooh, it goes right through me. Back in Mystic Falls, Jeremy and Bonnie are looking through a bunch of Grimoires to find out more about the necklace, but all of a sudden Anna appears warning about "the darkness" and all the books go up in flames. Yikes! Bonnie manages to use her magic to put out the fires - it does come in handy sometimes.
Over in Chicago, Stefan's still crying out as Gloria taps into all his memories about Elena. It's not long until she figures out that Elena is the doppelganger and should be dead. OH GOD. Luckily, you can always count on Katherine to make an entrance. "This is creepy," she complains, before stabbing Gloria in the neck and killing her. Amazing.
Katherine's still interested in Stefan's supposed diabolical plan. She's figured out that he's going to get in with Rebekah by siding with Klaus and making her want him more. But she can't work out what Stefan will get out of it. Stefan weirdly decides to tell Katherine (I suppose it's because she just saved his life). He explains that when he knew Rebekah and Klaus in the 1920s they were running from someone, and he wants to know who. Katherine is desperate to join in with his plan, but Stefan refuses and suggests she looks elsewhere for a diabolical partner in crime. Hmm, wonder where she could get one of those...
Back In Mystic Falls at the Council meeting, Damon, Liz and Carol are doing their best to pretend that absolutely nothing supernatural has been going on at all. Nothing, nada. That would be fine, but Bill shows up and he's not so convinced...
Caroline's shocked to see her dad in the Council room and makes a swift exit, deciding to hang out at Tyler's instead. Meanwhile, Alaric and Elena are just leaving when Damon catches up to them and announces that Bill's impervious to compulsion. Turns out there's something behind that mind control mumbo jumbo after all.
Bill's hoping to get control of the council and put vervain in the water supply. Elena thinks that might be a good idea without Stefan around to keep Damon in check. Funnily enough, this doesn't exactly please Mr Salvatore, who says he should have killed Bill this morning when he had the chance. Well, now he does. Alaric steps in to stop him but Damon's fed up of his "interfering" and "attempts to stop murder" and, um, breaks his neck.
Caroline's with Tyler, admitting that Bill is still her dad despite everything. But enough of that, it's time to make out! The only problem is that Elena calls - it's an emergency. Given that she's standing in front of Alaric's lifeless body and Damon's just gone to kill Caroline's father, I think that's a fair description.
Damon's found Bill, who rubs salt in the wound by describing Damon's compulsion technique as "a little lazy". Risky. Actually, Bill knows he's made a risk by not skipping town, but he says he doesn't think Damon's self-destructive enough to murder the Sheriff's ex-husband. By Damon's reckoning, that's now three people who've underestimated him today.
It's not long before he's feeding from Bill, but he says he won't kill him - just find pleasure in the whole fresh blood thing. Caroline turns up to defend her father and pushes Damon away, before feeding her blood to her dad to heal him (absolutely loved her: "Grow up" when Bill hesitates). Damon's not happy about this and pushes her onto the table, saying he's stronger than her. But Caroline's completely badass, says she's "angrier", and headbutts him. For real. A HEADBUTT. It was incredible, and Caroline firmly puts Damon in his place before rushing off with her dad.
Elena's unimpressed by Damon's behaviour and angrily tells him not to behave like this around her anymore. Damon points out that he's not exactly had a personality transplant and asks why Elena's bothered now. Elena says she doesn't want him to be what people think he is, and he replies: "A monster? Sorry to disappoint you, but last time I checked I'm still a vampire." Elena points out that he doesn't have to act like one, but Damon yells that he's not Stefan - Elena should stop trying to turn him into his brother. Such a stunning scene, with the sexual tension and the anger and the confusion - and all in a few short sentences.
Elena's not the only one who's annoyed with Stefan. Alaric's a bit angry about the fact that Damon killed him (even though he had his ring, obviously). Damon's fed up with everyone telling him how to behave, but Alaric fairly points out that maybe they just realised he's a "d**k".
Elsewhere, Anna shows up yet again but Jeremy's getting a bit fed up now - he thinks she might be jealous of his romance with Bonnie. Anna points out that she can only turn up when Jeremy wants her to and suggests that he hasn't told Bonnie about it yet because he still cares. Jeremy's too overwhelmed, and Anna's dawning realisation that he's going to shut her out is wonderfully done, especially as she begs him not to. But it's too late, and Jeremy goes to tell Bonnie the truth as Anna screams and cries that she's all alone. It hurts
Later, Caroline's still bugging Elena about Damon (she's had a long week and is just going to be blunt. Incredible.) She urges Elena to admit that she's attracted to Damon, but Elena refuses - she "can't". She's worried about what that says about her if she just thinks it for one second. Enough there to chew on, Delena shippers? Anyway, Caroline's distracted because she spots her dad. It turns out he's finally leaving Mystic Falls. He thanks her for saving his life and all, but when she says she'll be OK he replies: "You're a vampire, sweetheart. I don't think you'll ever be OK again." Caroline's face - devastating.
Meanwhile, Alaric's finally had enough of Damon and tells Carol and Liz that he wants to be on the Council, representing the Gilbert family. He points out that they both have links to the supernatural and he can represent the humans. Uh oh...
Elsewhere, Elena asks Bonnie if she can have her necklace back as she feels weird without it, and Bonnie agrees. But she's preoccupied and asks if Elena knew that Jeremy was seeing ghosts. When she turns round, though, Elena has gone. Rude! That doesn't seem like Elena...
Maybe because it's not! It's only Katherine, who rocks up at Damon's house (I love that you can tell it's her from just her giggle). She wants him to be her partner in crime and leave town, and Damon's feeling in just the mood after the day he's had. Katherine won't tell him where they're going but, dangling the necklace, promises it will be good. Oh boy...
Back in Chicago, Stefan's trying to charm Rebekah and ask him about who she was running from all those years ago. Rebekah worries that she can't as Klaus would be furious if he found out they were talking about it, so Stefan quickly apologises and tells her to forget he asked (smooth).
Rebekah asks about the girl Stefan loved and if it's true that Stefan's only with Klaus because he saved Damon. She says she thinks Klaus admires Stefan a bit but asks him not to say anything, and Stefan agrees. Then Rebekah grabs him and kisses him, asking if he'll ever love anyone like "that girl".
Stefan says he could, maybe, but suddenly Rebekah's whole face changes and she glares that she knows when he's lying (it's really something to behold). She claims his kiss gave him away, too, and when Klaus shows up she announces that something's wrong. She also adds that Stefan was asking about Michael. Klaus is furious... and rushes towards Stefan. Oh my God!
Luckily, Stefan's not vampire-dead (at least not yet). Later, Klaus wakes him up by kicking him - how gentle - and explains that Rebekah thinks he's holding on to a piece of his old life. And since she has such good instincts, he thought he'd check it out. Turns out they're in the back of a moving van, and Klaus opens the door. "Welcome back to Mystic Falls, Stefan," he drawls. OH. MY. GOD...
Another stellar episode of The Vampire Diaries
, then. It was brilliant to see Bonnie, Elena and Caroline as friends again, Katherine's back, CAROLINE DID A HEADBUTT, Stefan clearly still has feelings for Elena, Damon and Elena could have feelings for each other
and we left on a mighty cliffhanger. What more could you want? What did you think of the episode? Leave your comments below!
