"I'm coming back," Gillies told E! Online. "There's a hot mess in Mystic Falls. It's a hot mess! We need a little Elijah to restore some order."
He went on to say that the season finale is heartbreaking, promising that there will be "some tragedy".
"[The episode is] just going to rock the foundation of the fandom," the actor said. "It's stunning what the writers have done. I love what (executive producer) Julie Plec has done.
"I'm as eager as the fans to see how it evolves," he continued. "It's deeply tragic. You can expect some tragedy. That's all I can really say. Whatever's happening with this group of people is about to be changed forever."
Plec previously revealed that the season finale will feature extensive flashbacks focusing on Elena's (Nina Dobrev) life prior to the series, before the death of her parents and her first meeting with Stefan (Paul Wesley).

Well the promo shows Elena and Matt swerving the car into the river so 1 can guess what might happen to Elena.

I'll take a guess, somehow the brothers become human again while at the same time Elena becomes a vampire, dooming the love forever. Now that would be pure switcheroo. Anyone want to bet its Elijah who is the original whose bloodline the Salavatores come from.
