The Vampire Diaries exec Julie Plec has revealed that she knows how the show will end.

Plec told The Hollywood Reporter that she and series co-creator Kevin Williamson devised the CW drama's final scenes while writing the second season.

"We were tired and stressed and talked about the last character moments of the show," she explained. "[We] both started crying... and just felt like [the idea] was right."

Plec recently confirmed that work has already begun on scripts for a fourth season of The Vampire Diaries.

"[Season four will] take us through the rest of their final year in high school," she elaborated. "They're making decisions about their future... Do I stay or do I go?"

Vampire Diaries star Daniel Gillies (Elijah) recently announced that he has "not entirely" left the show.

"I'm deeply indebted to what [the show] has given me," he said. "I'd do anything for them in a instant,"

The Vampire Diaries continues on Thursdays at 8/7c on The CW. In the UK, the series airs on ITV2.
