Supernatural star Misha Collins has praised the show's producers for "taking risks".The actor - who plays angel Castiel - told The Huffington Post that the long-running drama feels different under new showrunner Jeremy Carver.

"I think Supernatural fluctuates a lot," Collins said. "The tone is not always consistent and reliable, and there's no template that every episode follows, so it's too early to say.
"But I do think that [Jeremy is] doing something different in the episodes that I've seen, and in the broad brush strokes that he's sort of etched out for me of where the season is going.
"He's definitely doing some new stuff. And as time goes on and the season arc plays out, we'll see how the tone in total is different."

The 37-year-old star added that season eight of the CW series will focus more on Castiel's "relationship arc" and his friendship with Dean (Jensen Ackles).
"Last season, Cas's relationship arc got virtually none [of the screen time] - he was an egomaniacal God figure, then briefly a Leviathan, then he was crazy," the actor explained.
"So there wasn't much for him to work with there. This season, there's going to be a lot more of the character interplay, I think. So far, that's what it looks like."
He continued: "I don't know if this is true or not, but I think that a lot of the reason Cas has often been found unconscious or crazy or evil or turning into God or missing is because he solves too many problems too easily for Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean.
"So it's a writer's device for dealing with that, and that totally makes sense. You don't want an incredibly powerful ally. It's kind of not as interesting."
New show exec Carver recently confirmed that Collins will appear in a "minimum of eight" new Supernatural episodes this season.

Yaaaaay Castiel! =D And Misha Collins, of course, haha. I love Castiel, and basically all the other named angels. ^_^ They've been my favorite parts of the show. I hope Castiel gets an interesting story that actually plays out on screen again, and that he isn't left in Purgatory or dies again. Way more than eight episodes too, please!

I really look forward to Castiel playing a larger role on the show again. However, I really thought the show was fascinating when there were more characters on it even though all characters were not in every episode...when the episodes seemed to alternate characters more. It will be interesting to see where Jeremy takes the show. We are definitely looking forward to next season.

The show felt like it ended in Season 5, the first season under Jeremy Carver was Season 6... and it was TERRIBLE! except for the character of Castiel. But Season 7 really brung things around, love the Leviathans. Season 8 could be impressive if they follow

Sera Gamble was the showrunner for Seasons 6 and 7 (both pretty poor, IMO). Jeremy Carver wasn't even on the show for that span -- he was working on the US version of Being Human.
But yes, more Castiel would help get the show back to what it should be.

Pet Monkey is right, Sera Gamble was Supernatural's show runner in season 6 & 7 while Jeremy Carver and his wife Ann were the show runners for Being Human (the American version). Ann remains as show runner for Being Human and Jeremy Carver, who by the way wrote some of the best episodes for Supernatural and was called one of the best writers by Eric Kripke, has been asked to be Supernatural's show runner for season 8 and I hope beyond.
