Glee star Chris Colfer has revealed that the character of Kurt was created especially for him after his failed audition to play Artie. The actor claimed that he originally tried out for the Fox show's wheelchair-bound student - a role that eventually went to Kevin McHale - before creator Ryan Murphy saw potential in his real-life story.

"I was auditioning for the part of Artie, the kid in the wheelchair, and I didn't get it, obviously. So that was it," he recalled to The AP. "So they invented a character for me. They created Kurt specifically.
"There are two experiences in my life that I just cannot wrap my head around. That's one. And the Golden Globes was the other. I just cannot believe they happened."
It has been confirmed that season four of Glee will feature Kurt following Rachel (Lea Michele) to New York and working with guest star Sarah Jessica Parker.
However, Colfer recently teased that Kurt will not be doing much "in a performance sense" when the show returns.
Glee season four premieres in the US September 13 on Fox.
