creator Aaron Sorkin
has promised that Jeff Daniels's irate protagonist will grow throughout the series.
Sorkin explained that the character of newsman Will McAvoy is going to be softened by the events of upcoming episodes and will again tackle the issues that prompted his outburst in the premiere.
"Will travels a thousand miles from the season opener to the season finale," Sorkin told TV Guide
"He even runs into the sorority girl he berates in the opening minutes of the series and gives her a very different answer to the question she first asked ['Why is America is the greatest country in the world?']."
Sorkin recently denied suggestions that Will is based on controversial journalist Keith Olbermann
He also explained that he intended The Newsroom
to "do something fun" with the cynicism around TV news
Olivia Munn, Dev Patel, Jane Fonda and Emily Mortimer also star in The Newsroom
, which airs Sundays at 10pm on HBO. It will air in the UK from July 10 on Sky Atlantic.
