The iconic villain will feature in CBS's update of Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, it was confirmed at this year's Comic-Con.
Doherty told reporters at the Television Critics Association Press Tour that he wants to remain faithful to the original Holmes canon, according to Deadline.
"We want to keep all our secrets," he said. "[But] I feel it's important at the end of the day to be true to the spirit of the character - a spider at the centre of the web of crime in London."
The showrunner also teased the introduction of Sherlock Holmes's father, describing the paternal character as "an interesting shadowy figure".
Irish actor Andrew Scott played Moriarty in BBC drama Sherlock, which has been compared to Elementary.
CBS president Nina Tassler recently insisted that the two shows are nothing alike, saying: "[Sherlock is] a wonderful show [but] theirs is very different from ours. I think there's plenty of room for another Holmes in our world."
Elementary will premiere in the US on September 27 and will air on Sky Living in the UK.

Watch Andrew Scott discuss playing Moriarty on Sherlock below:

Um, no. That quote describing Moriarty is originally from "The Final Problem", a Sherlock Holmes story. You know, that thing BBC Sherlock was based on?
"He sits motionless, like a spider in the center of its web, but that web has a thousand radiations, and he knows well every quiver of each of them."
It's your prerogative to choose to watch Elementary or not, but at least do a little research and educate yourself before making groundless accusations.

"Irish actor Andrew Scott played Moriarty in BBC drama Sherlock, which has been compared to Elementary". This paragraph should read, "Irish actor Andrew Scott played Moriarty in BBC drama Sherlock, which has been copied by Elementary". Sherlock came before Elementary DS!

Erm... isn't that what Moffat wrote which BBC Sherlock, Benedict Cumberbatch performed in the Reichenbach episode of Series 2?

I was about to say the exact same thing....
...And yet they claim that they are pinching and stealing from the BBC Sherlock and that they are going to make it very different.
