's executive producer Christopher Lloyd has promised that Mitchell and Cameron will have more adoption storylines in future episodes.
In the second season finale, the pair - played by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet
- agreed to consider expanding their family
Lloyd has now told TV Guide
that fans will see the duo making plans in upcoming instalments of the ABC comedy.
He revealed that one storyline will focus on Cameron and Mitchell wondering whether to ask a relative to be a surrogate, while another will see them meeting a pregnant woman.
"The next funny, and hopefully moving, chapters are on the way," Lloyd said. "The reality is this doesn't happen overnight."
He continued: "We have one episode where they find a pregnant girl who wants to make sure they are the right dads for her child. Because the baby's biological father was musical, she wants to make sure Cam and Mitch are musical as well, so they have to audition for her."
Ferguson has previously suggested that this season of Modern Family will be about Mitchell and Cameron's "struggle"
to have another child.
The show returns with a new episode tonight (January 4) at 9pm on ABC.> Read more coverage of Modern Family
