The actor told TVLine that he is "desperately hoping" for a second season of the CW drama.
"We've deliberately set it up in such a way that there will be more questions than answers at the end of the show," he admitted. "We don't want to tie it up in a ribbon and present it to everybody - we need somewhere to go next year."
Gruffudd added that "nobody knows" if Ringer - which stars Sarah Michelle Gellar - will be picked up for a second run.
"I think everybody's vying for that attention from the network," he said. "We're very aware of the numbers and that it's a numbers game.
"Creatively, we think we have a very strong chance, but as far as numbers, they might reflect a different story."
The Welsh star, who plays corrupt tycoon Andrew on the show, added that a new season would "present new ideas".
"As far as the storyline is concerned, we've set it up as if we are coming back," he said. "We're not shying away from anything and we haven't been asked to tie things up neatly."
Ringer continues on Tuesdays at 9/8c on The CW. In the UK, the series airs on Sky Living on Thursdays at 8pm.

I loved this show!

It is such a shame as Ringer was a show that was finally moving away from the W18-34 demo, but I really do think the long hiatus did not help as it is a complex show.

Ringer is such a good program and it'd be a huge shame if the story never gets wrapped up!
