Gabel made his debut as Lincoln Lee in the show's second-season finale, before recurring in the third run and being promoted to a series regular for the fourth.
However, he will not appear on a regular basis in the new episodes, TVLine reports.
One version of Gabel's character Lincoln was killed off in fourth season instalment 'Everything in Its Right Place', while another departed our world to live in the alternate universe.
However, the character may return for guest appearances in the final 13 Fringe episodes.
In a recent interview, Fringe exec Jeff Pinkner refused to confirm how large a role Gabel would play in the show's final season.
"Seth is spectacular and awesome," he said. "But as for his standing going forward... to say anything about that would be also to reveal things that are coming ahead."
Fringe will return to Fridays at 9/8c in the fall on Fox.
