Roth told TV Line that it is "too soon to tell" if the struggling sci-fi drama will continue beyond its current fourth season.
Fringe has fallen in the ratings in recent weeks, with the past two episodes hitting a series low in the 18-49 demographic.
The series, which stars Anna Torv and Joshua Jackson, also fell below 3m total viewers for the first time ever.
However, Roth claimed that overnight audience figures may not be representative, since many Fringe fans record the show for later viewing.
"This is a show on Friday nights that audiences love to DVR, and as such we shoot up anywhere from 40% to 63%, when you calculate the Live+7," he explained. "Hopefully that will be good enough for us to continue."
Anna Torv previously admitted that she tries not to worry about the ratings for Fringe.
"You can't help but hear how we're doing, but I sort of just let that slide," she said. "That's not my job."
The actress added: "I think now that they've brought in the DVR recordings and the [people who watch within] three days... I think that has changed things a little bit too."
Fringe will return to Fox on January 13. The mid-season finale will air on Wednesday at 10pm on Sky1 in the UK.

The breaks do sod things up it used to p*** me off with supernatural and you get to the stage when you don't know when its back on and you forget especially if they shift the day and time slot. as it says though most people record it or like myself buy the dvd/bluray/online stream which must be where they get alot of viewers and more importantly their paycheque.

I wish people would give this ******* show a chance, it's much better than some of the other science fiction and drama crap, I try to watch a range of shows as possible I watch many shows that I think could go on forever but get poor rating because people won't give shows like this a chance.

Better ratings? Stop stalling. Write stories where something really happens. AND FORGET THE X-FILES!
