The network secretly made the offer to Vieira "approximately two weeks ago" but she turned it down because she was not "interested in returning to the show", reports TMZ.
Vieira co-anchored Today alongside Matt Lauer after Katie Couric left to anchor the CBS Evening News in 2006. She left Today in 2011 and was succeeded by Ann Curry.
Earlier today, it was reported that Curry would soon be replaced on Today as Lauer's co-anchor.
NBC is said to have been in negotiations with Curry for weeks to have her return to a reporting role, with Savannah Guthrie as the most likely choice to replace her.
The change apparently is due to Today's declining ratings.
