'Weeds' season eight to be its last, confirms Showtime

Weeds will end this year, it has been confirmed.The Showtime comedy's upcoming eighth season will be its last, Entertainment Weekly reports.

"There were two shows, Weeds and Dexter, that really got Showtime taken seriously for cutting-edge original programming," Showtime entertainment president David Nevins said.
"How they get brought home is really important. In this case, both for the sake of the two women behind the show [creator Jenji Kohan and star Mary-Louise Parker] and an audience that's really invested in the show.
"TV fans love nothing better to complain about how shows end, and we really want to end this one the right way."
The show's final season will see the seventh season's cliffhanger resolved, and will include a time jump and a return to the suburbs.
Lionsgate TV Group president Kevin Beggs praised Kohan for Weeds' groundbreaking content and role in "ushering in a new era" of television comedy.
"From a creative standpoint, the show broke a bunch of barriers," he said. "It became one of the most talked about cable comedies and ushered in a new era.
"Jenji's unique voice skewed hypocrisy; whether attitudes towards drug use, racism, sexism or suburbia."
Weeds premiered in 2005, and centres on a widowed suburban mother (Parker) who begins selling cannabis in order to support her family.
The eighth and final season of Weeds premieres on Showtime on July 1.

Weeds got worse and worse as it went on. I still think Dead Like Me is the best thing to come out of Showtime, which got cancelled so prematurely. While Homeland is great and all, if 'Weeds' is anything to go by, it could run for years without any resolution.

For me the best Showtime show was Queer as Folk, its a shame it's not recognised as getting "Showtime taken seriously for cutting-edge original programming"

Damn, I love Weeds. I am one of the few people who don't think it lost it. It just changed direction a bit.
Although, I am glad they are honouring it with a proper ending and not some cliffhanger that never gets resolved.
