Max Brown has joined the cast of The CW's Beauty and the Beast pilot.

The drama, loosely based on an '80s CBS series, will star Smallville's Kristin Kreuk as homicide detective Catherine.

Terra Nova's Jay Ryan will also appear as 'beast' Vincent Koslow, the survivor of a botched military experiment.

British star Brown will play medical examiner Evan, who regularly assists Catherine with cases, according to Deadline.

The actor appeared on spy drama Spooks - known as MI-5 in the US - from 2010 to 2011, and was also a series regular on The Tudors.

Life Unexpected's Austin Basis will also star in Beauty and the Beast as Vincent's friend JT. Nicole Gale Anderson (Ringer) and Nina Lisandrello (Nurse Jackie) will play supporting roles.

Brothers & Sisters producers Jennifer Levin and Sherri Cooper have written and will exec produce the pilot.

A rival Beauty and the Beast drama is also in the works at ABC, starring Ruth Bradley and Darius Campbell in the lead roles.
