A television adaptation of the 1980s movie Romancing The Stone is in the works at NBC.

The film, which starred Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, focused on an unhappy novelist who travels to Colombia to save her kidnapped sister.

However, the NBC project will follow a successful but unhappy woman who meets an adventurer, Deadline reports.

The pair end up going on a different adventure each week, while the overriding storyline sees the woman trying to find her missing brother.

The script for the NBC show will be penned by Mark Friedman, who previously worked on The Forgotten.

Shawn Levy, whose production company is behind with the show, could direct the pilot if he is available. His previous credits include movies such as Night At The Museum and and Date Night.

A big-screen remake of Romancing The Stone has been rumoured for years but has not yet come to fruition.

NBC is currently working on a number of new projects, including remakes of The Munsters and Israeli drama Pillars of Smoke.
