"I never bathe in the same river twice," he told Graham Norton in 2011.
In a recent interview about the sci-fi series's 50th anniversary, current Doctor Who star Smith said he is still quite keen for his predecessors to return for a multi-Doctor episode.
"It's a [good idea], yeah. But that's easier said than done I would have thought," Smith said, reports Esquire.
He continued: "Chris will be alright. Well, I mean, who knows? I'd love it. I'd love him to come back... I love his Doctor. I really do. He was from Manchester. Proper hard. Leather jacket. He'd give my Doctor a bit of a whopping, wouldn't he?"
Smith's latest comments echo his previous declaration that he would love to work with Eccleston and David Tennant.
"I think as an event if it did ever happen - I don't know how feasible it is - to get David [Tennant] and Chris [Eccleston] back would be amazing," he said last month.

The upcoming Doctor Who Christmas Special will see the return of Richard E Grant to the franchise. Grant previously played a non-canonical version of The Doctor in the Comic Relief sketch 'The Curse of the Fatal Death' and the web series Scream of the Shalka.
Doctor Who kicks off its seventh series with the premiere episode 'Asylum of the Daleks' in August, although a premiere date has not been announced.

Even if Christopher Ecclest5on isnt o keen to take up the role of dr who once more, why not just appear for 5 min, so for instance, he could come to the rescue of clara, a dalek is about to exterminate her, suddenly the doctor appears, and saves her life

Ooh yeah, I would love to see Christopher Eccleston back for a special. He's my favourite Doctor but he must be with Rose though. The 10th Doctor can return with Donna :); the 11th Doctor can be with River or Canton or on his own- just not with Amy!

I think we will ultimately end up with a multi-Doctor 90 minute special featuring Eccleston, Tennant and Smith for the 50th. There's been a new regime for a few years now, and even Eccelston can let bygones be bygones. What we won't have (apart from maybe a sequence like in 'The Eleventh Hour') is any old Doctors. It would take too long to set up (in story terms) and be a nightmare to script for all those (lovely) egos. Whatever we ultimately end up with will be definitely be 'special' - 2013 is going to be a great year to be a Who fan.

How many times does Matt Smith need to say he wants Chris for the 50th anniversary..its not going to happen.

I think they should have a Four Doctors Special with Paul McGann (8th), Chris Eccleston (9th), David Tennant (10th) and Matt Smith (11th) with a companion from each incarnation - 8 with Grace, 9 with Rose, 10 with Martha or Donna and 11 with Amy. Wouldn't it be nice to have all of them in the Tardis?
