Cowell is reportedly implementing the changes after dubbing last year's crop of contestants the "worst ever" on the show.
This year's hopefuls will apparently have to perfect their dancing and styling among other aspects of their act.
The contestants will also be working more closely than ever with producers to choose the best songs that suit their voice.
Cowell also reportedly is looking to see acts with more "attitude" than last year.
Nicole Scherzinger has joined the judging panel for the upcoming ninth series, with host Dermot O'Leary recently saying that she "gets" British humour.
X Factor bosses were recently said to be looking for an "army" of Frankie Cocozza-types this year.

What about Leona Lewis, she doesn't dance and her concert was stunning, when she sang ,Cant Breath, the audience all wowed at the same time and it was absolutely fantastic, and X Factor will never find another Leona, Leona,s vocal range singing live is absolutely stunning, and sometimes i think X Factor gets it wrong, and the public also get it wrong in terms of judging, that's why so many runners up have made it big time and the winners are long gone.

No chance of finding anyone like Adele then, you know, the ones who have talent, can sing well and write their own songs, etc. Still, they will have "ATTITUDE"!

It is about time for Simon Cowell to make The X Factor more strict in terms of finding the standard of solo singers and groups to up their game in a "perfect higher standard". In order for would be pop stars to succeed in the real world, rather than letting their singing talent go below the required standard. Singers who do not improve their higher levels of their vocal and their performance ability will need to be shown to the door simple as that.

You don't need to be a good dancer to own the stage. I'm sure it helps someone like Beyonce, but did Mariah ever need to dance? It should be about finding their talents, not forcing some cringey choreograph upon them.

They've announced dance workshops at bootcamp in previous series, but it's never been about finding a technically proficient dancer. It's always been more about bringing out the contestants' inner performer and encouraging them to develop a sense of stage presence, which is a good thing. As for the styling, it sounds as though this new development will give acts more creative control - also a good thing. The stylist last year was awful after Simon took his best people to the US.
