Apple TV OS announcement tipped for World Wide Developer Conference

BGR says that the software will feature a new "control out" application programming interface, enabling users to control any connected components with the Apple TV remote.
The website claims to have received the information from a "trusted source", who also suggested that the new Apple TV OS will be used for the firm's long-rumoured smart TV hardware.
Apple is expected to unveil the next generation iteration of its mobile operating system iOS 6 at WWDC, but the company is not expected to showcase a connected TV set.
CEO Tim Cook recently described television as an "area of intense interest" for Apple, but remained tight-lipped concerning his company's plans for the sector.
Apple TV sold 2.8m units last year, and has shifted nearly that many in just the first few months of 2012.

I can't see this happening, its too much of a minefield. But even if it were to happen a) How will it control other devices, over a USB lead, over the network (ethernet/wireless), bluetooth those are the options that are built in currently. How many of your currently owned devices will work.....probably 1 more likely none...so its likely only new kit will work...AirRemote, AirControl to add to AirPlay...that I can see happening....but even then what would an AppleTV control...your surround sound, sure but what else...why would an Apple TV want or need to control my Sky box for example, maybe the TV, but what else is there to control, DVD, Blu-Ray but surely Apple dont want you to use that, they want you to use their AppleTV for movies, so can't really see a lot of point for this existing, when there are more pressing things to do, apps for example to allow iPlayer, 4OD, ITV player, etc, etc (and that includes Hulu, NBC, etc in the states) huge appeal for that...not so much for this.

Allowing Apple TV to control your Sky box would perhaps open opportunities for developers (or Sky themselves) to create a neat way of controlling your Sky Box from your iPad or iPhone, much like I've seen the Zeebox app control some new models of TVs. They could expand the current Sky+ app to give a more graphically rich experience when controlling and watching Sky rather than using the remote and on screen TV Guide?

You can't control Apple TV with iOS devices? Wow that sucks. They must have left it out on purpose.

Yes, You can get apps to remote control the Apple TV. This was talking about the Apple TV controlling OTHER devices FROM the Apple TV, so you turn the Apple TV on and it turns your TV on.

Yes you can. Apple's app 'Remote' on the iOS app store allows you to do this.

Tim Cook at D10 spoke quite a bit about Apple TV and it's plans, and how the userbase grew by almost double come the release of the 3rd gen box... by the sounds of it, while I'm sure Apple are trialling an actual television, I'm doubting it will see the light of day for some time. Not until they have perfected the set top box anyway.... which really needs it's own iOS app setup by the way!
