The character has proved popular among viewers since his return in September 2011 and Havers was expected to sign a new deal to stay on the soap.
However, a source close to the actor reportedly said that producers "thought it would be tricky to keep his storyline going", so it was eventually decided to "kill off Lewis in a memorable fashion".
The insider went on to claim that soap bosses believe his exit "will become one of the most talked-about soap scenes of the year".
The news frees Havers up to perform in a pantomime alongside Lee Mead at Southampton's Mayflower Theatre this winter, a role that will allegedly earn him more cash than his two stints on Coronation Street put together.
Havers originally found fame in sports drama Chariots of Fire, which will be re-released in cinemas on July 13 to coincide with the London 2012 Olympics.

i think that he should marry audrey and the wedding car could be involved in an accident, she survives and he dies, i just hope that when they film it that it isnt on the coronation street set as another crash on that street would be silly as it is a built up area and they would need to put speed bumps on the cobbles!! lol!

Lewis is just outlived himself and i hope they dont do a detectives story in the aftermath. I really hope they do anoth MASSIVE story line like the tram crash because to be honest its getting a bit "been there, done that , got the t-shirt"

But I mean it would have been simple to keep him on as a character. Just a sort of background/fill in character. Cause he's with Audrey and he has a job in the bistro. So they cant really use the excuse of producers "thought it would be tricky to keep his storyline going".
