Producers of the ITV1 soap were apparently "desperate" to lock Marsh into a long-term contract and promised her a series of major storylines alongside the impressive salary.
Bosses are said to have been particularly impressed with her vocal talents as Elsie Tanner in the premiere of the Coronation Street musical Street of Dreams.
"Kym is a very talented actress and singer. The scriptwriters have come up with some pretty explosive stuff for her and wanted her signed up for three years so it could all play out," a source said.
"The majority of the cast are either on six-month or one-year contracts. They only ever give these types of deals out when they really want to keep someone.
"There are some major storylines coming up for her and people are going to see a completely different side to Michelle in the months to come."
Friends described the deal as a change in fortunes for Marsh, after fiancé Jamie Lomas was accused of cheating on her in recent weeks.

With those artificial torpedos, she looks even more like the comic Karen Taylor. I half-expect her one episode to come out with "It's all tits with you isn't it, tits, tits, titty-tit tits" (viewers of Touch Me I'm Karen Taylor will know what I am on about!)

Shame, what with it being the Titanic centenary this year, and after what happenned with that Cruise ship that came into port in Italy upside down, the scriptwriters really missed a trick by not sending her on another cruise!

what a waste of money, it would have been better letting her go and bringing back a former popular character.

I suspect this is over exaggerated hype from the Daily Star, well I hope it is, surely the people in power at Corrie wouldnt be so mad as to give a 3 year contract to a not particularly popular or good character. Michelle should have been written out yonks ago.
