Shepherd told Soaplife that Michael, who is engaged to Charlie Brooks's devious alter ego Janine Butcher, is "definitely plotting something".
"I see him as a functioning psychopath," Shepherd said. "He's not quite enough of a psychopath to be certifiable.
"But he's able to act without emotion. He can close off his compassion and be very cold."
About Michael and Janine's summer wedding, he added: "Her insistence that he sign a pre-nup suggests she doesn't trust him. If they pulled in the same direction, they could make a great team.
"But they do have this power struggle going on. Michael's definitely plotting something."
Janine, who is also starting a family with Michael, only kept the baby after her stepmother Pat persuaded her while dying of cancer on New Year's Day.
Brooks is taking a six-month break from EastEnders from August, explaining that she requires "a bit of breathing space" from the BBC soap.

I totally agree. He is one of those characters, much like Janine, that one minute you hate but the next they have gained your support again. The complexity of him keeps me interested, and his relationship with Jean Slater is so intriguing, it makes me want to know why he is acting that way toward her. I honestly can't wait to see more of Michael!

Psychopath? I thought he was a sociopath. Must be the terrible acting.

Michael is a fascinating character. SJS portrays him brilliantly. There's a powerful chemistry he has with Janine. They're matched beautifully. They'll have a stormy road ahead, but I hope if there is an eventual breakup it won't be anytime soon. Michael can be a downright *******. He's done some vile things to people. Yet, I can't help but feel sorry for him. He's a torchered soul for sure as seen when he shows that vulnerable, child-like side when he allows himself to show emotion. I think he's the most complex character in walford which makes him mesmerizing. For an actor to portray these elements to a character, they deserve praise. Not criticism. I've loved & been riveted by Steve ever since he was first introduced to the mix. It also is yet another credit to the man that he's sexy to boot. There's no doubt he's one of the more intriguing characters in albert square.
