The pair, played by Georgia Taylor and Ben Turner, will both make their departures later this year and show bosses have promised that they have a dramatic exit storyline in store.
Ruth and Jay bow out before Christmas and their final episode has been billed as "explosive and heart-stopping", holby.tv reports.
Meanwhile, a Casualty spokesperson told Digital Spy today: "After four action-packed years playing Dr Ruth Winters in Casualty, Georgia Taylor has decided to leave the show.
"Georgia is a brilliant actress and we cannot thank her enough for her fantastic work portraying Ruth's numerous highs and lows. We wish her the very best for the future and, although we know our viewers are going to miss her, we don't think they'll be disappointed with the character's extremely dramatic exit later this year!"

"Casualty is currently introducing a wave of new talent to the show including Michael Obiora, Madeleine Mantock, Charlotte Salt and Oliver Coleman and there will be some very exciting changes to Holby's emergency department as the programme switches to HD in the New Year."
Casualty continues tomorrow at 9pm on BBC One.

Guy Georgia is on record as saying the move to Cardiff merely made her sit down and decide whether she wanted to be Ruth for the rest of her life, or whether she should take the plunge and test the waters for other projects. It was not the reason for her decision to leave, merely the catalyst for her thinking seriously about it. As professional actors it is their job to go where the work takes you, and both of them are far too good to have a hissy fit simply because a show changes filming location (indeed, being one of the only cast members to live within a 30 minute drive of Cardiff, Georgia would have been less inconvenienced than most by the move).

Ian I suppose it's all a matter of taste - you don't like Zoe, I don't like Lenny at all; in my opinion poorly acted, unrealistic and unprofessional beyond the point of dismissal. I agree that Dylan is an addition to the cast, and I'm slightly biased about Sam as Charlotte is a local girl made good from North Staffordshire (although having seen her as Michael French's daughter in Born and Bred, it's a bit weird seeing him as her boss now!). I think above anything else they'll struggle to recreate the passion that Ruth and Jay's romance (which Georgia likened to Ross and Rachel from Friends) has generated amongst fans of the show.

the last time I watched casualty regularly was when Charlie went into the men's room and had a heart attack (i believe it was end of series during one summer) I have watched it periodically since then. Fan of Georgia Taylor thou and actually think she would be a good fit in House M.D.

will miss both characters - especially as Ruth is pregnant and they make a lovely couple. Let's hope they all leave alive and in one piece.
