Emmerdale star Natalie Anderson has revealed that there is a "cliffhanger" exit lined up for her character Alicia Gallagher.

Alicia will disappear from screens in a few weeks' time as Anderson is currently expecting her first child and has gone on maternity leave.

Viewers are currently seeing the build-up to Alicia's departure as she is facing jail for turning violent against Val Pollard. The story is leading up to a sham wedding storyline for Alicia and David Metcalfe (Matthew Wolfenden).

Anderson filmed her exit scenes at the weekend and today (June 6) told This Morning that she was surprised to get such a big storyline.

She commented: "I definitely can come back and I definitely hope to be back by the end of the year. But it was a huge surprise for me. I genuinely thought I would have just been going off to see my sister, wherever she is.

"And then this huge storyline came about with a previous conviction, the fact that she's falling in love with David as well, and Justin coming back to try and take Jacob. It was just so elaborate, I was like, 'Thank you so much, I'm really grateful!'"

Sharing more details of Alicia's upcoming departure, the 30-year-old added: "The way that they leave it is very much on a cliffhanger. When I read it, I was like, 'No! Oh my God!' So hopefully the audience will be willing her to come back!"

Emmerdale airs weeknights on ITV1.
