A number of print and media organisations have overturned an injunction obtained by Freddie Starr
ITV's UK news editor Lucy Manning made the announcement today (October 4).
Ex-News of the World
chief reporter Neville Thurlbeck responded to Manning via Twitter
: "Interesting. But will ITV really have the bottle to run the story which Fleet Street has been terrified of printing? Good luck!"
According to The Guardian
, Mr Justice Tugendhat declared that the injunction should never have been heard, since it was a claim for libel and there was no evidence that any outlet intended to report the allegation, which Starr denies.
He said that the case did not relate to confidential information, but to ''words which are alleged to be libellous''.
The judge added: "The upshot is that there is not any evidence of intent by any of the defendants to commit an unlawful act.
"The defendants would in any event only publish an allegation that they consider they would be able to defend. Therefore the court cannot grant an injunction."
The interim injunction, which was granted yesterday (October 3) after Starr's solicitor was contacted by an ITV News journalist, applied to 11 broadcasters or newspapers
Starr is currently on his 'Back From The Jungle Tour' and is due to perform at Wolverhampton's Wulfrun Hall tomorrow night, and Blackburn's King George's Hall on Saturday.
The TV personality first came to the public's attention when he appeared on Opportunity Knocks
with his comedy/beat group The Delmonts.
He was the subject of a 1986 front page headline on The Sun
which read "Freddie Starr Ate My Hamster".
Starr always denied the report and it later emerged that his publicist Max Clifford had allowed the story to run despite knowing it was false.
In his later career, Starr took part in Celebrity Wife Swap
in 2008 - he and his wife Donna swapping partners with Samantha Fox and her partner Myra.
He appeared in the 2011 edition of I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!
but he withdrew after just three days
due to ill health.
