London 2012 Olympics: Tom Daley surges to over 1m Twitter followers

has reached over 1 million Twitter followers.
The London 2012 Olympics diver reached the milestone this morning (August 3), despite his disappointing 4th place in the synchronised swimming finals on Monday.
In the six months prior to the Olympics, Daley had a following of just 150-250,000 followers on the micro-blogging site, according to Starcount
In the past seven days, his popularity has seen him gain 600,000 followers, and a further 300,000 on Facebook, making him the fastest growing Twitter user worldwide.
Daley was the subject of online abuse from a Twitter user following his performance on Monday.
A teenager was arrested and given a warning
after he made comments about Daley's deceased father. A footballer was also suspended by his club
after he allegedly made a homophobic tweet about the diver.
Cheryl Cole tweeted a message of support
to Daley on Tuesday, saying that she would like diving lessons.
Tom Daley is now behind only Andy Murray in terms of popular Team GB athletes.
