Katie Holmes's marriage to Tom Cruise
was reportedly hindered by his close relationship with a high-ranking Scientologist dubbed his "manwife".
52-year-old David Miscavige served as best man at the former couple's wedding five years ago and has been "joined at the hip" with Cruise ever since, according to The Sun
He is also said to have showered Cruise with gifts including an aircraft hangar and a custom-built luxury coach, driving a wedge between the Mission Impossible
star and Holmes that resulted in their divorce
on Friday (June 29).
"Miscavige and Tom are joined at the hip," an insider claimed. "Tom runs every important decision in his life by him.
"Tom really values his opinion and Katie often felt like she came in second place. When it became clear how much influence he had over her husband she knew she had to get away."
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes spotted together in Rome in April 2005, marking the beginning of their relationship
It has been alleged that Cruise's previous wife Nicole Kidman also clashed with the star over his friendship with Miscavige, causing him to retreat from the organisation.
Miscavige was apparently able to lure the actor back to Scientology after his marriage to Kidman broke down in 2001.
Holmes is widely reported to have ended her marriage to Cruise over fears that their 6-year-old daughter Suri would be forced into adopting Scientology
