has paid tribute to a young cancer victim.
The rocker received a key to the city of Hickory, North Carolina from Mayor Rudy Wright on Monday (May 28), according to WENN
After the ceremony, he saluted the memory of 4-year-old Ava Holder, who he met while attending his daughter Jorja's All Star Ascend Fun Run school event last week.
The Poison frontman had reached out online to fans to help raise money for the child, who suffered from an incurable and rare form of cancer called neuroblastoma.
Holder unfortunately did not survive the week, and after news of her death, Michaels wrote on his website
: "Memorial day will always be bittersweet for many reasons. Last night @ 8:35pm pacific time Ava Holder passed away at almost the same time I was on stage receiving the key to the city...
"It is moments like this that I search to find balance in my soul. It is why I live by this prayer... 'God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.' I am still searching for the wisdom."
Michaels recently settled a lawsuit with the creators of the Tony Awards
after his on stage injury in 2009.
