"David Beckham is a national hero," said Elle editor in chief Lorraine Candy.
"He is an icon and Elle is known for featuring icons on its cover. This is a first for us on the newsstand and I believe he is loved by men and women alike.

"Anyway, who doesn't want to see a picture of one of the world's most handsome men on the front cover of a magazine? It will be a collector's issue."
The full feature appears in the July issue of Elle UK, on sale Wednesday, May 30 in two different covers.
Behind-the-scenes images of the shoot had been teased earlier this month.

David Beckham is a national hero? In the same way that Cheryl Cole is the Nation's sweetheart? He kicks a ball around a field; hardly makes him Winston Churchill, does it.

Beautifully immaculately gorgeous! Oh how jealous some people can be!

Just because I don't like tattoos, doesn't make me jealous. I don't like olives either, but not because I secretly harbour jealousy for them. It IS actually possible not to like someone or something without jealousy being involved.

Couldn't they have picked an actual Olympian for the Olympic edition.

Why a hero? Has he fought for his country? The word hero should be kept for our soldiers x their families!
