Jessica Simpson gives birth to baby daughter Maxwell Drew Johnson

Jessica Simpson has given birth to her and fiancé Eric Johnson's first child.

The singer welcomed daughter Maxwell Drew Johnson in Los Angeles this morning (May 1), according to a post on her website.



A statement from Simpson read: "Eric and I are elated to announce the birth of our baby girl Maxwell Drew Johnson. We are so grateful for the love, support and prayers we have received. This has been the greatest experience of our lives."

Simpson is believed to be resting comfortably with baby Maxwell, who apparently weighs 9 lbs, 13 ounces.

The singer was first reported to have checked into an LA hospital earlier today, sparking rumours that she had gone into labour.



Simpson announced her pregnancy in October 2011 by posting a Halloween-themed picture of herself dressed as a mummy.

"It's true I'm going to be a mummy," Simpson wrote in a caption accompanying the image.

The 'With You' popstar was forced to deny rumours that she'd given birth last week by telling fans in a Twitter post: "Don't believe what you read ladies and gents!"

Simpson and Maxwell's father Johnson confirmed their engagement in November 2010. She was previously married to Nick Lachey from 2002 to 2005.
