Ronan was awarded a scholarship by the Rhodes organisation to study abroad at Oxford University in the UK.
The 23-year-old has already earned degrees from Bard College and Yale Law School, and has begun work as a political advocate.
Ronan represented UNICEF and the Obama administration on humanitarian aid missions to Africa, following in the footsteps of fellow charity worker and mother Mia.
He wrote on Twitter that he's very honoured to become a Rhodes Scholar, tweeting: "#Rhodes is a great honour & opportunity. But for now very focused on fostering youth jobs and voices w/ [US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton] & @StateDept. (sic)"
Farrow and Allen's son will be among 32 Americans to be studying at Oxford University as part of Rhodes's scholarship programme.
Ronan's relationship with his father Allen has been notoriously strained. In 2005, Ronan branded the director immoral for romancing and later marrying Farrow's adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn.
