Wallace Weatherholt, a 63-year-old from Florida, was arrested on suspicion of unlawfully feeding an alligator and later posted $1,000 (£635) bail.
Weatherholt dangled a fish in front of the nine-foot reptile and placed his hand on the surface of the water while giving a family a tour of the Everglades on June 12, ABC News reports.
The alligator bit off his hand and was later found and euthanized. Weatherholt's hand was recovered, but could not be reattached.
He is due back in court in Florida on August 22 regarding the second-degree misdemeanor.
An alligator handler was bitten back in January after a prank went wrong.

The alligator was "euthanised" i.e. murdered for doing what came naturally? Ridiculous. I do feel sorry for the man, but what a stupid thing to do. He was probably trying to show off.

I agree. Why did the alliagator have to die because some fool put his hand near it's mouth. He caused the situation and yet the poor creature dies for it.
