The Egyptian Olympic Committee (EOC) chose a sports gear vendor that supplied counterfeit clothes bearing the Nike trademark, the Daily Telegraph reports
EOC chairman General Mahmoud Ahmed Ali defended the purchase, saying: "They all have the same logo. How can we know?"
Ali called for Nike to sue the faulty distributor, but refused to be blamed for the mix up: "It's like if somebody created false coins and you happened to possess them. Is it your fault then?"
Synchronised swimmer Yomna Khallaf, who first spotted the fake gear, tweeted that the EOC has now ordered legitimate uniforms from Nike, although it remains to be seen if they will be ready for the opening ceremony on Friday.
