Jill Makinson-Sanders, mayor of Louth in Lincolnshire, wore the 8ft pink novelty outfit in an effort to promote the famous sausage that comes from the region.
However, The Mirror reports that the costume was interpreted quite differently by a number of residents, who were shocked and confused by the mayor's appearance.
Mum-of-two Sandra Ellington said the outfit "certainly gained a few titters among the crowd".
She added: "It's something you'd expect to see on a stag-do - not being worn by a respectable mayor."
Another Louth resident agreed, commenting: "Surely she could see that it looked more like a c**k?"
Makinson-Sanders was unrepentant, claiming that she did not attend the event in an official capacity.
She pointed out: "I was not wearing a chain at this event."

To be honest it would probably suit Boris Johnson more.

Geez, can a woman not wear her sausage costume in peace anymore? What has this country come to?
