Things couldn't get much worse for Nelson the bird.

First his siblings died, then he was rejected by his parents, and now he's been branded the "ugliest bird in the world".

Nelson, the only egg of three to hatch, is currently being cared for 24 hours a day by zoo staff.

Native to New Zealand, the bird has been described as "a cross between an alien and a roasted chicken".

However, the story doesn't end there.

This is a baby Kea parrot, and when he grows up, he will supposedly spring beautiful olive green and orange feathers.
