Florence + the Machine: 'Spectrum' - Single review

"We actually have a dance outfit side project called Side Project," Florence Welch recently told us. Naturally, we were a little shocked when the harp-lover made the revelation, and part of us felt slightly worried that Flo and co could end up getting lost among the chart's plethora of fist-pumping club anthems. However, if there's one thing latest single 'Spectrum' proves, it's that she knows how to write a distinctive uptempo number without compromising her style.

"Say my name, and every colour illuminates/ We are shining, and we'll never be afraid again," the flame-haired songstress belts over a rapturous chorus complete with rousing piano and delicate strings - demonstrating that techno synths are not the only key to a euphoric hook. While the single version is near perfection, an accompanying Calvin Harris remix highlights just how big a Florence house anthem can be, making that side project an even more tantalising prospect.
