Carly Rae Jepsen: 'I want my music to be unique'

Carly Rae Jepsen has expressed hope that she will carve out her own niche in pop music.

The singer - who is the protégé of Justin Bieber - told The AP that she had not expected her US number one single 'Call Me Maybe' to attract a mainstream audience.



"We used the idea of being like a modern-day Annie Lennox-type pop, like 'Walking on Broken Glass' [on 'Call Me Maybe']. I want to do songs like that," she recalled. "So, we decided to add some different instruments like strings, things you don't normally hear in pop songs right now."

She went on to say: "We weren't expecting that it was going to be like the game-changing song, we just thought it was a little bit of tune and now we're all just kind of looking at each other like, 'What happened?'"

Jepsen went on to reveal that she has some surprising musical influences.

"Style-wise, I think my love affair with pop music is just getting stronger. If anything I want to go further down that road but I'm inspired by Robyn, La Roux, Dragonette, I love those artists," she said.

"I'm hoping to add my little spin to pop music so that it's a little refreshing like something you haven't heard yet."

Jepsen recently joked that she is too embarrassed to actually give her phone number to a romantic interest.
