D'Angelo later faded from the public eye, after pressure from his musical success reportedly proved too much for the performer.
The 38-year-old has now returned with his first live appearance on US television in twelve years.
The 'Brown Sugar' singer performed a medley of funk and soul songs on the Samuel L Jackson-hosted ceremony, including his hit 'Untitled'.
D'Angelo made his first live US performance in twelve years at last month's Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Tennessee.
