He was followed with a parody performance by host Samuel L Jackson and director Spike Lee, who sang a spoof of West and Jay-Z's song 'N****s in Paris'.
The 35-year-old rapper then took to the stage to accept the award for 'Best Group', beating out nominees including Diddy Dirty Money and Mindless Behaviour.
During his speech, West said: "I wish Jay-Z was here to say something politically correct for me."
Jay-Z then made a surprise appearance from backstage, accepting the award by saying that the two performers were determined not to "rely on our name" while working on the album.
The BET Awards continue to air live from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
