The frontman stated that the studio work for the band's upcoming 13th LP has been their best since 1979.
"We've had the best three weeks in the studio since 1979," he told Irish TV programme The Late Late Show.
However, he added that U2 need to produce "something special" for their next album, after 2009's No Line on the Horizon did not contain many hit singles.
"I think they [the other band members] are very aware that U2 have to do something very special to have a reason to exist right now."
U2 are said to be working with One Direction songwriter Carl Falk for their next album.
The band were the highest-grossing touring act last year and were estimated to have earned $231.9m (£150.1m) for their 34-date '360°' tour since January 1, 2011, drawing in a total of 2,387,535 fans.

Doesn't every artist say this about every album they bring out?

"Doesn't every artist say this about every album they bring out?" ...my very thoughts exactly, and I think Bono said that or something similar prior to the release of the last album
