Houston's long-time musical director Rickey Minor has been booked as executive producer for the special, which will take place in Los Angeles in December, reports Billboard.
"We all felt that if any show could pay tribute to Whitney's music, it would be Divas," VH1 president Tom Calderone said. "December felt like enough time where it wouldn't be sad anymore, you'd want to celebrate her music."
Houston appeared on VH1 Divas three times during her career, in 1999, 2002 and 2003.
Recent years have seen performances from the likes of Mariah Carey, Beyoncé, Kelly Clarkson, Adele, Leona Lewis and Nicki Minaj.
Performers for the Whitney Houston tribute instalment have yet to be confirmed.

This is going to be EPIC. I am so excited about it. Mariah, Celine, Christina, Mary, Beyonce, Alicia, Monica, Brandy, Jordin and a more will probably want to come and sing a Whitney tune or two.

Vh1 Divas hasn't been good since 2000 or something so let's hope this one is better. I seriously hope Rihanna and the other non talented pop acts are excluded and they get some real singers in there. After all they are honouring 'The Voice'. Let's see Christina, Mariah, Leona, Kim Burrell, Gladys, Patti...

This is great news that they are dedicating a show to her the only trouble is that there isn’t really enough big voiced singers anymore to do her justice.
