Details of the Barclaycard Mercury Prize 2012 have been announced.

The event will be held on November 1 this year, with the 12 shortlisted albums confirmed in September. The dates differ from the usual nominations announcement in June and formal ceremony in September.

The eligibility period for albums has also been extended between July 12, 2011 and September 10, 2012.

Dan Ford from the Barclaycard Mercury Prize said: "By announcing the Barclaycard Mercury Prize 'Albums of the Year' after the summer, we will be able to generate more interest in the shortlisted artists than ever before, building momentum in the run-up to the Awards Show and beyond.

"Importantly this year's eligibility period for entries will be extended to include UK albums released between Tuesday, July 12, 2011 and Monday, September 10, 2012."

Singer-songwriter PJ Harvey won last year's coveted prize, and admitted that she was surprised to have won the accolade twice.

2011's televised awards saw all 12 nominees perform ahead the official announcement for the first time.
