The singer sold 5.8 million copies of 21 in the US throughout 2011, beating Michael Buble's Christmas to the top spot.
Buble's festive record sold 2.4m units, pushing Lady GaGa's Born This Way down to three with sales of 2.1m.
Lil Wayne's Tha Carter IV is at four with 1.9m copies sold, while Jason Aldean's My Kinda Party is at five with 1.6m.
Adele has become the first UK artist to top the US end-of-year album chart since the Spice Girls scored with their debut album in 1997.
The songstress also had the biggest-selling single of 2011 in the US with 'Rolling In The Deep', beating LMFAO's 'Party Rock Anthem' to the summit.
The track sold over 5.8m copies throughout 2011, compared to 5.5m copies of LMFAO's summer hit.
Speaking about Adele's US success, XL Recordings' Ben Beardsworth told Newsbeat: "The soulful nature of her music seems to connect well with a US audience. They recognise talent in that area.
"It was only when 'Rolling In The Deep' became a big airplay record that things went into the stratosphere."
