The singer-songwriter said that she has recorded a total of 31 songs for the LP, which she hopes to release next summer.
Speaking at the American Music Awards, she said: "I'll have to pick the final 12 - the Sophie's choice process of letting go of the ones that don't make it."
Morissette, who became a mother for the first time earlier this year, insisted that "it's not one of those records that is a lullaby record of any kind", but admitted she has been "profoundly affected" by motherhood.
Last month, the star posted an image of herself in the back of her recording studio with the message: "back in the studio saddle....the songs have come in droves...! helmet on (sic)".
Morissette's last release was 2008's Flavours of Entanglement, which peaked at number 15 on the UK album chart and number eight in the US.

'Flavours of Entanglement' was wonderful, I still play it quite often.
