PJ Harvey has said that she didn't think it would be possible to win the Mercury Prize for a second time.

The singer won the prestigious music award last night for her eighth studio album Let England Shake after first winning the prize ten years ago.

Speaking to Fun Lovin' Criminals frontman Huey Morgan about her win, Harvey said: "I was surprised. I thought it was unlikely to win something twice, so I was very surprised, but really elated and really ecstatic that it's happened.

"This record means so much to me, I think it's one of my best pieces of work. To have got to this point 20 years down the line of my career it means a great deal."

She added: "I've always followed my gut instinct and my own path and wanted to make good work and hope that would touch other people.

"I think the way the world is changing, so many things seem to be going in the wrong direction and so for this to happen to me tonight, it gives me a lot of hope."

Following the announcement of Harvey's Let England Shake win last night, Amazon reported that sales of the album soared by over 1,000%.
