Hoffman explained that he found the character's backstory "interesting", and said that he is looking forward to teaming up with the film's cast.
"It's a great group of actors. It's a great environment. And the character was something I was attracted to. It was just an interesting role," he told Entertainment Weekly.

The actor revealed that he hadn't read the novels by Suzanne Collins before he discovered he was in line for the part. However, he soon watched the film and is now halfway through the second book.
"It's good," he said. "I've read the script, which is true to the book. I kinda ruined it for myself. But I'm reading it anyway, because I really want to find out everything I need to know about this guy."
