Spider-Man actor Willem Dafoe has offered his thoughts on Marc Webb's decision to retell Peter Parker's origin story in his recent movie reboot. The John Carter star told Empire that he was "shocked" when he learned that the director had chosen to use exactly "the same story" with The Amazing Spider-Man.

Dafoe said: "Where do I start? I haven't seen it. I don't know what to say. I will say that I did see the preview, and I was kind of shocked at how it's another version of exactly the same story.
"Surprising. I wish them well, but I think it's hard to beat the charm, the naive charm, of the first one. There's never really any possibility of going back."
Dafoe starred as Norman Osborn/the Green Goblin in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man, a character who is absent from Webb's reboot but mentioned by name several times.
The Amazing Spider-Man, starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, was released in cinemas this week.

I agree in part - the novelty factor is gone unless you are too young to remember the original (although with a 10year gap I suspect this will only be a small number of people)
I would have preferred if they just started the film with Peter as Spider-Man or spend a little less time explaining that Peter has spider powers after being bitten by a genetically altered spider. Overall I'm happy with the reboot in general though and I think Andrew Garfield is a much better Spider-Man that Tobey MaGuire

Yeah he will be shocked after he see's the new one because then he'll know how great the new version IS and how BAD HIS version was.

He said he hadn't seen it and by the trailer it was the exact same story? Um, no, maybe he should actually watch the film he is judging wrongly.
I loved the Amazing Spider-Man. I hated Toby Maguire in the role and it is amazing having such a strong cast now with much better storytelling.

It isn't the same story, but it is at the same time. It's an origin story, granted they've gone Ultimate rather than 616, but it's still an origin story. That's what held this film back for me, if they hadn't bothered telling us a story everyone and their mum already knows, they could have spent more time making me care about the really rather poor choice of villain.

Eactly how can the origin be closer to the Raimi one? the only thing Raimi got right was the origin! Down to the MachoMan(RIP) wrestling, it was exact-- perfect-- then all down hill til the end of SM3...
