"I haven't been approached by anyone to play Rupert Murdoch. That's just a beat up," Crowe wrote.
"I am off to build a boat. Will be gone for quite some time," the tweet continued, referring to his role in Darren Aronofsky's Noah which begins shooting next month.
Colin Firth was also reported to be in talks to co-star as Harold Evans, whose memoir Good Times, Bad Times forms the basis for Leon Lecash's script.
The relationship between Murdoch and Evans, and specifically Evans's fight for editorial control, will be the focus of the film.

Cant blame him for backing out of this one...his popularity stakes would go on the slide
