Joss Whedon's superhero movie has amassed £15.4 million in UK ticket sales, giving it the second-biggest four-day opening after Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix in 2007.
Starring Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth, the feature has already grossed more than the entire box office runs of previous Marvel offerings The Incredible Hulk (£8.2 million), Captain America (£9.5million) and Thor (£14 million).
Internationally, The Avengers has posted a huge $178.4 million (£109.7m) opening and will boost its box office further when it opens in the United States on Friday (May 4).
Evans said recently that he was in awe of Downey Jr and Hemsworth when he began working with them.
