Scarlett Johansson has praised Joss Whedon for being "gender blind".

The actress was one of the stars in attendance at Thursday's (April 19) Avengers press conference in the UK, where she spoke about what it was like to work with the Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator.

"We did talk about my character's plight and her dark past and all of those things and never did he say anything about my character's gender at all," Johansson said.

"I think Joss is gender blind in some way," she continued. "He wants his female characters to be dynamic and competitive and assured and confident and that has nothing to do with anything but the fact that he celebrates those kinds of strong female characters.

"He just a charming fellow that way."
