Ferrell added that if the writing goes well, he is hoping to shoot Step Brothers 2 with John C Reilly later this year.
Step Brothers proved to be an international hit in 2008, raking in more than $128m (£81.2m) at the worldwide box office.
The film featured Ferrell and Reilly as two unemployed 40-year-olds who clash when their parents (Richard Jenkins and Mary Steenburgen) marry.
Ferrell next stars in the Spanish-language comedy Casa de mi Padre opening on March 16 in US cinemas. A UK release date hasn't yet been determined.

The first one was okay, but there are far better Will Ferrell films which actually have scope for a sequel. Anchorman, Old School, The Goods.... and what ever became of the rumoured Funeral Crashers?
